The Clockwork Silverback
Epistemic cowardice & its enforcement architecture
Cross-section of the closed system.
The display layer exists to protect the core.
Epistemic cowardice generates the need for a dominance display. The dominance display protects the cowardice. The metacognitive deficit that produced the wrong position cannot detect the social verdict when it is rendered. The display continues after the audience has left.
Field notes — behavioral signature
Deploys floor-holding at precisely the moment the intellectual position is most indefensible. Locked eye contact during interruption rules out obliviousness; the signal is received and overridden. The display is not calculated; the defensive system fires before reflection can intervene. Confidence and competence run in perfect inverse proportion. A real silverback yields comfortably under direct challenge. The fake one cannot afford to.

Diagnostic utility
The framework does not provide the collective verdict, the room renders that independently. It provides early recognition, before the collective calibration completes, so the observer does not capitulate while others are still processing what they are seeing. Its primary value is the room without witnesses: the one-on-one, the hierarchical review, the setting where the display runs without a collective to correct it. That is where naming the mechanism is not retrospective comfort but operational necessity.
