The Clockwork Canary
Early-warning infrastructure inverted; the monitor that protects what it was built to detect
Unlike all other entries: arrows point inward.
Signals are absorbed. The canary sings regardless.
The canary was placed in the mine to die visibly when conditions became dangerous. The Clockwork Canary has been rebuilt to sing regardless. The monitoring data is now generated by the process being monitored. The signal that danger is present has been redesigned to signal safety. No actor holds this mechanism. It runs on its own. This is the drift-design feedback loop at its most consequential.
Failure signature — what functioning monitoring would detect
The Clockwork Canary has no behavioral signature because it has no actor. What it has is a failure signature: monitoring data that is consistently favorable to the monitored party; review processes that route findings to the entity being reviewed; whistleblower systems that have never been used, or have been used and produced no output; performance evaluations that measure alignment rather than impact; audit processes whose scope is defined by the audited. The canary is singing. That is the tell. A real canary in a healthy mine sings. But a healthy mine does not need to be monitored quite this carefully.

Diagnostic utility
Because the Clockwork Canary is a mechanism and not an actor, it cannot be confronted or persuaded. The only repair is structural: independent data sources, separation between the monitoring function and the monitored party, outcome-based validation of whether monitoring has ever detected anything. The key diagnostic question is not "is there monitoring" — there is always monitoring. It is: "has this monitoring ever produced a result that the monitored party found inconvenient?" If not, the canary has been rebuilt. Its song is the danger signal it was designed to suppress.
